Dental Insurance Costs in Michigan
Dental insurance customers should expect to pay certain costs associated with the policy:
- Premium—the cost of the plan, typically paid monthly.
- Deductible—the amount you pay out of pocket before the plan pays benefits (dental deductibles are relatively low). This might apply to each member on the plan.
- Coinsurance—the out of pocket portion for which the customer is responsible; a percentage of the total cost based on type of service (i.e., patients might pay 20% of the total fee for the service while the insurance company pays 80%).
- Copay—also an out of pocket payment, typically a set amount (i.e., there might be a $50 copay for a filling).
The price of a dental plan in Michigan depends on the type of plan, what’s covered, one’s zip code, one’s age, and the number of members covered.
Types of plans:
- PPO (preferred provider organization)—uses a network of dentists who provide services for set fees. To get the most out of the benefits, customers must get care at in-network providers.
- Dental HMO (DHMO)—customers choose a primary care dentist. Network providers receive a set fee every month whether patients visit or not. Preventive care is typically covered at no cost to the customer.
- Discount dental plan or dental savings plan—this is not the same as insurance. Enrollees pay a set annual fee that entitles them to discounts at participating providers.
In Michigan, dental HMO plans start at about $17 per month and PPO plans start at about $30 per month.
Dental Insurance in Michigan
Children aged 0-3 have limited access to dentists in Michigan. But some school-based dental programs do provide sealants, and the state has a free fluoride varnish program. The Michigan Oral Health Fact Sheet reported that almost 30% of parents in Michigan send their kids to bed with a bottle of juice. This contributes to tooth decay. Nearly 30 percent of Michigan 3rd graders had untreated tooth decay, according to a state survey. Many kids and seniors don’t get the dental care they need because of high costs.
Only 56% of Michigan residents have dental insurance. 37% of Michigan’s residents live in areas where water is not fluoridated, such as the Northern Lower Peninsula and the Western Upper Peninsula. Michigan fell far below the national target for health centers with dental services. There is a shortage of dentists in the state. All of these factors underscore the importance of dental insurance, which is relatively affordable in Michigan. The state also runs the PA 16 program to provide preventive care services for underserved populations. Michigan tracks the dental health of its residents and is invested in oral health.
