Dental Insurance Costs in New York

Dental insurance will help you save money on dental care, hands down. But there are costs consumers should be aware of, including the:

  • Premium—the price you play for the plan. This is typically paid monthly or in one annual payment.
  • Deductible—the amount you pay out of pocket before benefits kick in. In general, the deductible applies separately to each member on the policy and is applicable to the whole year. Dental plans tend to have low deductibles.
  • Coinsurance—the percentage of the total cost that you pay. For example, the dental insurance plan might pay 50% of the cost of a filling while the customer pays the other 50%.
  • Copay—the set fee you pay for a service. A plan might, for instance, have a $20 copay for cleanings.
  • The cost of dental insurance depends on what’s covered, such as preventive care (like cleanings), diagnostic services or exams, and/or specialized services like major restorative procedures (like root canals and crowns). Where you live, your age, and how many family members are covered will also affect the price of a dental plan.

    Types of dental plans:

  • Dental HMO (DHMO)s allow a customer to choose or be assigned to a primary care dentist from a smaller network where you receive care and, if needed, referrals to specialists. Out of network care is not covered. These plans tend to have the lowest premiums and no annual maximum.
  • Preferred provider organization (PPO)s allow a customer to choose to see any dentist in a larger network. The cost of care is lower at in-network providers, but you can go outside the network for care. Premiums might be higher, but you have more choices for where to receive care.
  • Fee-for-service plans have no network; customers can choose any dentist. Once you meet the annual deductible, you’ll share costs with the plan. These plans have higher premiums since there is no limit on which providers you choose.
  • Dental discount/dental savings plans differ from insurance. Customers pay an annual or monthly fee to receive discounts on dental services at participating providers. These plans typically have no annual maximums and no referrals required for specialists, and they offer discounts on all types of services.
  • A PPO plan for an individual is about $40 per month in New York.
