Best Dental Insurance North Carolina

Dental insurance policy holders should expect to pay monthly or annual premiums (the price of the plan), plus deductibles and copays or coinsurance. Many dental plans cover 100% of the cost for preventive care such as exams and cleaning, but customers will pay a portion (copay or coinsurance) of the cost for major services such as root canals and crowns. Dental savings plans offer discounts on dental services, so with these plans customers will pay a reduced rate out of pocket for each service.

The price of a dental insurance plan depends on the type of plan, what’s covered and how many members it covers. Zip code and age also affect cost.

Plan types:

  • Preferred provider (PPO) — customers save money when visiting a dentist in the network. These plans typically cover 100% of preventive care and a percentage of major procedures. Many of these plans have an annual maximum.
  • Dental HMO — lower cost plans that require a customer to choose a primary care dentist and seek care there to be covered. Preventive care is usually covered at 100% and major services have set fees. These plans are easier to find without an annual maximum.
  • Fee-for-service — customers pay for services out of pocket until they meet the deductible, then share costs with the dental plan. Customers choose any dentist. Premiums tend to be higher for this type of plan.
  • Dental savings plan — these plans are popular, but they are not the same as insurance. With these plans the customer pays a set yearly fee and is then entitled to discounts at participating providers.

PPO plans in North Carolina start at about $24 per month for basic preventive coverage. An enhanced plan costs close to $40 per month and a premium plan is $55 per month.

While 85% of 5th graders in Wilkes County have dental sealants, only 6% of 5th graders in Warren County do. Some counties have school-based dental programs that provide preventive care for students.

In North Carolina, 88% of residents who are served by the public water system receive fluoridated water. 64% of adults in North Carolina have seen a dentist in the past 12 months. 65% of patients at dental practices have private dental insurance, 9% have public insurance, and 27% are uninsured. 21% of those over 65 have complete tooth loss and half of those in assisted living facilities have tooth decay. However, with the affordable cost of dental insurance in North Carolina, oral health is attainable.
