When Should You Enroll in a New York Medicare Supplement Plan?

Once you enroll in Medicare Parts A and B, you are eligible for enrollment in a Medicare supplement plan. Adults approaching age 65 can begin the Medicare enrollment process three months before their birthday. Applicants in New York have six months to sign up for Medicare supplement plans with guaranteed issue rights. In New York, you can enroll in Medicare supplement plans anytime. By law, insurers must accept your application and offer plans at the standard rate regardless of preexisting conditions and medical history.

Medicare Enrollment in New York

New York State law requires any insurer providing Medicare supplement plans to accept applications at any time of year without medical underwriting. This means Medicare beneficiaries can take advantage of year-round open enrollment for Medigap plans and cannot be turned down for pre-existing conditions. Your medical history or former claims can not affect your rates. New York law also guarantees portability, which applies to any Medicare supplement plan that has a waiting period for treatment of preexisting conditions. Medigap providers are required to reduce the waiting period by the number of days you were covered under another form of “creditable” coverage (as long as there were no breaks over 63 days). New York residents under 65 who receive Social Security Disability Insurance are eligible for Medicare after a two-year waiting period. Those who have end-stage renal disease or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) can also sign up for Medicare before reaching 65, with no waiting period.
