When should Enroll in a Washington Medicare Supplement Plan?

In Washington, the best time to enroll in a Medicare supplement (or Medigap) plan is in the first six months after you turn 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this enrollment window, your application will not be subjected to medical underwriting and a company cannot deny or charge more for coverage based on your medical history. Outside of this enrollment window, you can still sign up for a Medicare supplement plan any time, including outside of Medicare open enrollment, but coverage could be denied or premiums might be higher based on medical history or preexisting conditions.

If you decide to delay enrollment in Medicare while you or your spouse are still covered by employer health insurance, the window to enroll in a supplement plan is six months after you sign up for Medicare. The enrollment window for Medicare supplement plans is not related to annual open enrollment time for Medicare.
