Safe Step Walk-In Tubs Reviews

Safe Step Walk-In Tubs come equipped with standard features other companies consider optional upgrades, such as cleaning systems and therapeutic devices. We’ve rated Safe Step the “Great for Arthritis and Joint Pain” winner in our walk-in tub buyers guide because Safe Step has the Arthritis Foundation’s Ease of Use certification. Plus, every Safe Step tub is customized to meet the size and design needed for the project. The company’s tubs are manufactured in the United States, come with a lifetime warranty, and according to company representatives, are the no. 1 choice by sales volume for the product category.

After purchasing a Safe Step tub, the company will arrange for delivery, installation, and hauling away your old tub or shower. You will not need to hire additional plumbing or electrical laborers to complete the project. Upfront fees may be required to start construction.

  • Most full-service installation and removal take less than one day
  • More features than other tubs

Safe Step Walk-In Tub Features

While the size and shape of Safe Step walk-in tubs often vary, many have the same standard features. Because Safe Step can customize its product to fit customers’ needs, homeowners rarely need to change the size or layout of their bathroom. Therapeutic devices are standard on all tubs, including the Dual Hydrotherapy Massage System and Chromotherapy System.

Safe Step walk-in tub models have several key safety and comfort features to minimize risk during bathing for anyone with mobility issues. Users get into the tub using a side door, shut the sealed door, then fill their bath without worrying about falls, slips or trips. The heated seat keeps users warm while they wait for the tub to fill.

These benefits are the reason why people buy Safe Step walk-in tubs:

Safe Step Costs and Pricing

Safe Step walk-in tubs are an investment in the comfort and safety of the homeowner. The company was reluctant to share prices with us because, like any construction project, costs will vary depending on the size and scope of the project. However, we were told that Safe Step models start at $10,000 for the walk-in tub, including shipping and installation.

Safe Step avoids quoting general prices since nearly every project is unique. To help make the cost more manageable, the company offers a financing plan with approved credit. Before choosing a payment plan, check interest charges and compare them with other credit-based options.

The company also offers a “Helping Hands Rebate” of up to $1,500 to help offset the lack of Medicare coverage, and discounts for military veterans. Getting an exact quote for a Safe Step tub in your home is free, but you’ll need to request an estimate by completing a form on their website. For guidance on what to look for in the price of a walk-in tub, visit our walk-in tub guide.

Safe Step Warranty

Safe Step covers its products with a lifetime warranty on parts and labor for the original purchaser as long as a company representative installed the product. This warranty covers the tub (including manufacturing defects), door seal, faucets, water pumps, heaters, and blowers. Specific exclusions may apply, and coverage may not pay for all service or labor costs for every repair. There is a two-year warranty on caulking.

Safe Step Customer Service

Safe Step provides customer service via a toll-free number at (800) 346-6616 or chat on their website 24 hours a day. For those interested in buying a tub, a rep will return your call within an hour or two, or you can schedule a time to see one of the many showrooms in the U.S. Those who have already purchased a tub have access to the customer service line from the moment they pay their initial deposit. This same number will connect them to a representative for any ongoing troubleshooting or warranty claims that may come up.

Safe Step Complaints

Customers report being pleased with the responsiveness of the service team in resolving issues with leaks or answering questions that arise over time. Buyers describe Safe Step walk-in tubs as a luxury home bathing experience without sacrificing safety. The perks of owning a bathtub come up frequently from customers with mobility issues, with some reporting a significant relief of pain symptoms from conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) rates this company with an A+, its highest rating. Safe Step has earned this mark by responding to customer questions and complaints quickly. Many of the reviews left by customers are specific to the experience they received at a particular Safe Step dealer and may not be a reflection of service at another location or the brand.

The most common complaint received by customers is that the tubs and showers can leak soon after installation. It’s not uncommon for a newly installed walk-in tub to need adjusting after some use. Almost all verified Safe Step reviews mention promptness and professionalism in getting service providers back to the home to make these adjustments under the original lifetime warranty.

Some complaints were related to unclear pricing guidelines. Some customers felt pressured to buy when a representative visited their home to measure the bathroom for appropriate fitting, and some said that figuring the total cost of various models and options was confusing. However, most verified reviewers that mention price seem satisfied by their overall purchase and refer to the higher-end tubs as a worthwhile investment for their health and well-being. Customers compared the step-in tubs to having a private hot tub in their bathroom.

Finally, a few reviewers warn that these walk-in tubs can use more water than a standard bathtub and often require an upgrade in the hot water system to accommodate the volume.

Safe Step Q&A

  • My home doesn’t have a standard-sized tub. Will my bathroom have to be remodeled to accommodate a walk-in tub?

Some remodeling may be necessary. Safe Step will determine which tub is best suited for your bathroom, including size, plumbing and electrical needs, fixture placements, and aesthetics. Their trained team members will recommend the appropriate tub or shower for your needs after inspecting your tub area.

  • Will my existing tub or shower need to be removed first?

Yes. The Safe Step team will handle this for you. Their professionals are trained in proper removal and clean up, which is included in the cost.

  • How much are the additional plumbing or electrical charges required for installation?

All additional installation tasks that may include additions to your plumbing or electrical systems come bundled in the price and are included in your custom quote. The Safe Step team has membership in the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), and professionals have received extensive training on how to ensure your systems are treated appropriately upon install.

  • Does Medicare or Medicaid cover the cost of a walk-in tub or shower?

No, these programs will only cover the cost of durable medical equipment, which does not include walk-in tubs.

  • What kind of warranty comes with my product and installation?

Safe Step guarantees its products and the quality of installation for a lifetime against manufacturer’s defects and performance of the tub, door seal, faucets, water pumps, blowers, and heaters.

  • What else should I know about Safe Step?

Safe Step Walk-In Tub Co. is based in Nashville and has been providing walk-in tubs and showers since 2009. They have several showrooms across the United States and Canada, and their professional sales reps are trained to work with customers to find the right walk-in tub or shower with their existing bathroom floor plan. The company only sells to homeowners and has received the Arthritis Foundation Ease-of-Use Commendation after having its products independently tested.

This was the absolute worst shower that I’ve ever took in my life. The salesman lied about the currency and we had to put a $4000 deposit down. The showerhead had little pressure compared to the last showerhead. I would not recommend this for an elderly person because it is very hard to close the door.

We've enjoyed our Safe Step walk-in tub. It also helps our son who has some back issues. The installation was very quick and professional. They did a good job and a good cleanup job. So, we are very happy with the installation. We like all the features of the tub. I had a bath and it was difficult to get in and out of. The Safe Step walk-in tub solved the problem.

The reps from Safe Step were very pleasant and helpful. Installation was a breeze for them. They cut out the old tub and then got to work doing the plumbing. We were staying out of their way. They did have to take out a couple of doors and door trims to get the new Safe Step into the bathroom. But once they did, one started working on the installation and the second gentleman started putting the doors back together. They were done in no more than eight hours. Everything looked fine. We've used the tub several times now. We enjoy it. It's easy to get into.

I'm not nuts about the air bubbles that tend to blow water behind us onto the shelf. It makes them wet. After the first time, we threw a towel up there and that took care of things. The only change is, after we use the tub, we like to take a shower and the tub uses up all the hot water. So, you get in the shower and it's a cold one. It doesn't heat up that quickly. What we checked into is an electric tankless heater to supply the tub and let our regular gas heater take care of the shower.

It was slippery getting in and out of the regular tub. So I said, "Let me try this one with open the door and walk in and sit down." So, I bought a Safe Step walk-in tub and I'm okay with it. I'm not just pleased so far. The part I don't like is that you have to get in and sit there and get your water going, and then you have to wait for it to drain before you can open it. I hope it's never been an emergency where I'm gonna need to get out of it because you can't open the door until you wait for it to drain.

As far as the salesperson who came out, he kept asking if I had any advertisement and I didn't let him know that I had. In the end, he tried to sell me a shower. It will cost 2,000-something. I said, "Well now, I was told by some people that if you get it, you get a free shower." I didn't like that part about it because he knew all the time that it was supposed to have been a free shower, but he didn't think I knew about it. I didn't like that he wasn't all the way truthful.

The installers were in and out in less than two hours. The first day when they brought it out and they set it down outside and I got in and went in, it was a hassle to squeeze in. They didn't have that larger one because I wasn't gonna be satisfied with this. So he called somebody and then he came, and he said, "Well, we do have another size." It took a week later and they brought the other one out. I tried it and it was easier to walk in and sit down than the first one was. To close the door, you had to squeeze up a bunch to close the door without it hitting your leg. So then, they brought me out the other one about a week later.

When he did, that was when he looked at the door that he had to take it through in the bedroom and he said that he had to cut my wall to get the larger tub in. He has to do what he has to do. When he did, he cut the wall and he did put everything back as best he could on the door and the piece that he had cut out. He nailed it back up together and then put the doorframe back up. So, made it look as neat as he could with the crud in it.

As far as the tub, it takes a little bit too long to fill up. That's one of the things that's the downside of it. I was hoping that it would have had a different drain system that wouldn't take as long to drain the water out. Other than that, I like the micro. The color water change is pretty. It's just nice if I could get in and if the water would come in faster. Otherwise, I'm pleased with it.

I'm handicapped and I was really terrified of falling in my shower. So, I went online and I put in walk-in tubs, and Safe Step came up first. I looked into it and called. I looked into a couple of others, but Safe Step looked like what I wanted, so I went with it. The sales rep was very energetic and told me about all the other tubs down the market, and why Safe Step was better than all the other tubs.

The quality of work is good. I got there as the installers were leaving and I did get really upset at them because my son asked them how much I paid for it and they told him. That was inappropriate. As far as having the product, it meant freedom for me. I was really afraid of my shower and now the fear is gone. I can stand up and take a shower in it, and sit down and take a bath. I usually do both. In one session, I normally stand up for a few minutes and then sit down and bathe.

Safe Step's presentation was good. They came out and showed me some options, and they were telling me how it was helpful and all the good stuff about it. I liked the presentation part of it. I ended up purchasing the tub. The installation went well. They widened the door and then they said that I could go get another door. They told me how wide the door should be, and they cut my carpet underneath and down into the floor. They told me there is some type of plate to get to go under the door, which I never could find correctly. I put a door in there the best I could have.

Then the tub has been giving me problems ever since I had it. The jets didn't work so they had to come back out. And now my tub has been leaking for a month and no one has came out. I called them several times. I got one return call. They said he was going to send it to the technician and he will be contacting me, which he never did. So, I called them this morning. I've been calling everyone outside to get somebody to help. I'm in an over $20,000 contract. I feel I'm paying for this tub and it's not benefiting me, and I don't want to mess my credit up. So, I don't know what to do. So, I called them again this morning, and I spoke with a lady named Lisa. She went back and saw when they had put the ticket in. She was going to the management about it today. I don't have a copy of my contract. So, she's gonna make sure I get a copy of that, and make sure somebody called me back. Lisa sounded promising.

Now, when I run the shower part, it doesn't leak but when I fill the tub with water, it leaks downstairs to the laundry room. So I haven't been in the tub since the first part of January.
I know they won't give me any refund. It's hard. I don't know what to do about this situation. I got it in November, then I had issues with it. It took about three weeks to come back out after they installed. When he first installed it, it didn't work properly when I went to get in it. So, it was three more weeks before they came back. It worked for a couple of weeks. And then, all of a sudden, it was leaking really badly. I'm very dissatisfied. I thought I'll be enjoying the tub, but I haven't gotten to enjoy it yet.

I like everything about my Safe Step tub. The installer did okay. It took him about eight hours. The quality of the product is good. As far as draining the tub, it takes about 10 minutes to get started and it drains about half-hour or 45 minutes in there. And whenever you get out, you feel really good. You go to bed and you can sleep like you never slept before.

I had told Safe Step I was interested and they sent somebody to the house. They did a presentation. They showed me everything they had. I got the product, and the installation was really good. The guy did a really great job. They gave me a demonstration, told me how to do this and that and they left me with instructions. I keep that by the tub in case I don't remember certain things. The tub cost a lot but it looks really nice. Everybody likes it. There's a lot that it does. I like that I can play my music while I'm in there. The lighting is really nice. I like that, and the jets. I like that I can sit down, and I can get in and out of it. Getting in and out of it is the best thing.

At this point, we're getting used to our Safe Step walk-in tub. We're learning a couple of things like you can't fill it up too high or it splashes out when the jets go on. You can't stay in too long. So, it's a learning experience. My favorite is having the ability to walk in and not have to step down into a bathtub. The installers were great. McKinley did the presentation and he was great as well. He was very friendly and knowledgeable.

I get in and out of our Safe Step tub all right. I'm a fairly good size and it's really too small for me. I like the bubbles. I don't care nothing about the lights. The heat is good and I do like the fact that the water temperature is the same all the time. It is safe because you can't get out unless you unlatch it or you can't get into it without unlatching it. So, it's kind of like you're in a pen.

The install experience was fascinating and the installers seemed to know what they were doing. They did it quickly. It took most of the day. Then they had to do some more stuff the next day. It was electrical. They had to hook up the next day. We ordered the tub on the 28th of February and they didn't get around to putting it in until sometime in about the middle of November. That's a long time.
