Dental Insurance Costs in Florida

Dental insurance customers pay for plans with a monthly or annual premium. Some companies charge a one-time enrollment fee to sign up. On top of that, customers can expect to pay a deductible, which is the out of pocket amount you contribute before benefits kick in. Most dental plans also have coinsurance or copays that represent a portion of the total cost of treatment. For example, a dental insurance company might cover 50% of the cost of a filling, while the customer pays the other 50%.

The cost of dental insurance in Florida depends on the type of plan, what services are covered, and how many family members are covered. Zip code and age will also affect the premium.

Types of dental insurance:

  • PPO (preferred provider organization)—gives members access to a network of dentists who contract with the insurance company to provide services at reduced fees. These plans typically have the highest premiums, but they also provide the most coverage.
  • DHMO (dental health maintenance organization)—pay a fixed monthly amount for access to a smaller network of dentists. Premiums tend to be lower, with a focus on preventive care such as cleanings, exams, X-rays and sealants.
  • Fee-for-service—offers the largest network of dentists for consumer choice, but at a higher premium.
  • Dental discount/dental savings plan—this is not insurance. Customers pay an annual amount and get discounts on dental services with participating providers. These plans cost less than insurance, but you’ll most likely pay more out of pocket.

A dental HMO plan starts at $11.99 per month in Florida. A dental discount plan starts at $9.99 per month or $99 per year for an individual and $19.95 per month or $175 a year for a family.

Dental Insurance in Florida

Florida has more than 12,000 licensed dentists practicing in the state. The most populous county in the state, Miami-Dade, has 64.8 dentists per 100,000 residents. But some of the less populous counties, such as Lafayette and Liberty, have a much lower ratio of dentists to residents which has resulted in a shortage of dentists in some areas.

The vast majority of residents in Florida receive fluoridated water. This provides a good foundation for dental health in Florida. Dental insurance is another affordable way to maintain healthy teeth and gums. A recent study showed that 25% of third grade children in Florida had untreated tooth decay. 19.2% of adults over 60 did not have any teeth, and 47% of adults statewide have had at least one permanent tooth removed due to decay. Many schools in Florida offer school-based sealant programs; these programs served over 100,000 kids in 2017-2018. As of 2018, 53% of Floridians reported having dental insurance and 66% of Floridian adults had visited a dentist in the past year.

Florida Combined Life Insurance Company

Florida Combined Life Insurance Company offers Blue Cross and Blue Shield dental plans for kids and adults. The basic care plan has no deductible, no annual maximum, and no waiting period. The mid-level and premium plans cover specialist care, offer discounts on orthodontics and cosmetic procedures, and provide out-of-network coverage. Members who choose the mid-level or premium plans are also enrolled in the Oral Health for Overall Health program. This program provides enhanced dental benefits at no additional cost for people with certain medical conditions.
