AmeriFreight Review

Buy a car online or move to another state and you’re looking at a lengthy, potentially dangerous drive possibly over several days. AmeriFreight began in 2004 and evolved over the years into a full-service market leader in the auto transport industry throughout the United States and worldwide. The company prides itself on customer service, particularly in its focus on seniors, students, emergency services professionals, and military personnel who all receive a discount on their final car shipping rate. AmeriFreight’s headquarters is in Peachtree Georgia and is a preferred car shipper for the U.S. military.

Why Use AmeriFreight?

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) provides essential details about the moving process and auto transport services in “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move.” This document explains all that goes into planning and working with carriers to complete a relocation, which can be overwhelming. Brokers like AmeriFreight partner with you during the moving process to make the necessary contacts and plans while ensuring all paperwork gets completed correctly and the carriers are professional and reputable. AmeriFreight helps customers ship vehicles long-distances within the United States and provides international car shipping broker services via business relationships with many prequalified reliable carriers.

How to Ship a Car with AmeriFreight

To get started using AmeriFreight to ship your car, call the company at the number on the website for a free consultation and an estimate. Alternatively, you can use the quote tool on their website.

After you finalize a contract and schedule a pick up with AmeriFreight, the driver inspects your vehicle then loads it onto the trailer for transport. The driver notes details like the odometer reading and any existing damage on the Pick-up Bill of Lading to protect you, the carrier and AmeriFreight. The vehicle safely moves your vehicle to the assigned destination, typically on a trailer with three to ten cars unless you use enclosed transport. AmeriFreight ensures no one drives your vehicle without your knowledge other than briefly during the loading and unloading process.

AmeriFreight tracks your car shipment, and agents are available for customers all the way through delivery and after your car has been delivered should any questions arise. At the time of delivery, you inspect the vehicle for damage. While damage is rare, it is recorded on the Delivery Bill of Lading if found, or you sign off on the delivery if everything is in order. AmeriFreight assists customers in the unlikely event you need to file a damage claim.

AmeriFreight Car Shipping Costs

There are no fixed rates for shipping a vehicle due to factors like the size, type and condition of the car, fluctuating diesel fuel prices and the miles between the origin city and final destination. Other issues affecting the cost of shipping a car with AmeriFreight are:

AmeriFreight quotes range from $450 to $2,000 to ship a standard sedan in the continental United States. If you are a retiree, student, emergency services professional or serve in the military, look into AmeriFreight’s discounted car shipping rates, currently set at $25-$35 off your car shipping bill.

We got quotes from AmeriFreight for shipping a midsized car to and from various cities across the U.S. to give you an idea of how much it costs to ship your car. Below you’ll see estimated costs from nine departure and destination cities.

AmeriFreight Car Shipping Rate Estimates
Origin Location Destination Location Cost
Seattle, Washington Sacramento, California $700
Washington, D.C. Fort Lauderdale, Florida $750
Dallas, Texas San Diego, California $750
Atlanta, Georgia Los Angeles, California $850
Austin, Texas Albany, New York $850
Los Angeles, California Miami, Florida $900
San Francisco, California New York, New York $1,050
Newark, New Jersey Seattle, Washington $1,150
Houston, Texas Spokane, Washington $1,250

You can receive a free estimate by calling AmeriFreight or using the rate calculator on the company website. Enter the origin and destination states, vehicle details and whether you need an open or enclosed carrier to get a quote. While you’ll have to enter an email address, you don’t have to wait to see the quote. When we tried the rate calculator, we received an $872 estimate on the site with a follow-up email quoting $1,325 with no explanation of the discrepancy. The email quote was reasonable while the quote from the online calculator seemed suspiciously low.

An online message form is available for submitting questions, and there’s an “Español” button at the top of the site to click and read everything in Spanish. Of course, you can call or email AmeriFreight, which has agents available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST during the week and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

AmeriFreight Gap Coverage

AmeriFreight offers the Allied Fidelity Total Assurance PLAN (AFta PLAN) which compliments the carrier’s vehicle shipping insurance. This coverage provides gap coverage to pay all costs for damage to your vehicle. AFta pays for minor repairs or reimburses you for your auto deductible for major losses, even if you find the issue within 48 hours of taking possession of your car. If you opt for the AFta PLAN, expect to pay an additional $100 to $130 depending on the coverage purchased.

AmeriFreight Q&A

  • Why should I use a broker like AmeriFreight instead of an auto transport carrier?
The majority of reputable auto transport carriers conduct business via a broker. AmeriFreight provides confidence to consumers by ensuring carriers are trustworthy, licensed with the Department of Transportation, legally vetted, and fully insured to transport vehicles.

  • What is AmeriFreight’s Door-to-Door delivery?
This service involves the carrier AmeriFreight contracts with picking your vehicle up at your home or business and delivering it to a convenient location. Door-to-door delivery costs more, but you don’t have to drive to a terminal to ship or receive your car. If the tractor-trailer can’t make it to your door due to the width of the road or an extremely curved driveway, you will have to meet with the driver in a convenient location with sufficient space to safely load your vehicle.

  • Do I need to car insurance If I purchase the AFta PLAN from AmeriFreight?
Yes, you must have personal vehicle insurance before entering into a contract with AmeriFreight.

  • Does AmeriFreight offer any discounts other than those for seniors, students, emergency services professionals, and military personnel?
AmeriFreight provides a $35 discount to customers who sign a shipping contract within 24 hours of receiving a quote. Return customers and multiple vehicle shipments are eligible for a $50 discount.

  • I live in a rural town. Will AmeriFreight still deliver my car to me?
Remote locations require carriers to go outside of their scheduled route. Depending on how far away your town is from the nearest large city, you can expect to pay close to double your initial quote for remote deliveries.

Conclusion

AmeriFreight is one of the most respected brokers in the auto transport industry and is equipped to assist consumers with choosing the best possible vehicle shipping method and carrier. The company makes the process of shipping a car straightforward by partnering with reputable transportation companies while working on behalf of the consumer to solve any problems that could arise with their auto transport. I specifically purchased the “comprehensive insurance” as things on the road do happen. I followed the instructions to take before and after pictures of my car, etc. Upon receiving my car there was a chip in the windshield.

I tried filing a claim including my car photos and the AFtA company denied the claim because they stated the chip was already there as “noted” in the barely legible BOL. The insurance is a waste of money and I would not recommend this company.
