Bottom Line

AmeriGlide designs and sells stairlift models for straight and curved stairways as well as outdoor stairs. You can choose between new, used or refurbished stairlifts which give you pricing options. Check out our picks for the top stairlift companies below.

AmeriGlide provides many products to help people move around every room of their homes including elevators, stairlifts, dumbwaiters, bath lifts, pool lifts, ramps and more. With a focus on streamlining the manufacturing and installation process for these products, AmeriGlide has a reputation for fairly-priced, reliable stairlifts and other accessibility devices. If you or a loved one are finding it difficult to get around your house, AmeriGlide likely has a solution.

Two-thirds of seniors or 15 million people have trouble climbing stairs, and AmeriGlide is well known for their stairlifts with over 40,000 units sold. Designed for people who have difficulty navigating stairs, a stairlift is a chair on a rail that slides up or down a staircase so you can safely use the stairs. AmeriGlide has affordable designs for standard staircases and models for curved and outdoor staircases.

Stairlifts require you to have some level of mobility to sit in and get out of the chair, so AmeriGlide also sells a line of platform lifts and wheelchair lifts which are best for people who use a wheelchair or wouldn’t be able to sit in a chair without assistance.

Pros

  • One of the most popular names in accessibility devices
  • Self-install or technician-install options
  • Consults with customers to determine their needs and recommend custom designed stairlifts when required

Cons

  • Some products require custom design and measurements, which can drive up the price
  • Customers must install most stairlifts or hire a professional

To help make their products affordable, AmeriGlide provides financing through FirstBank or PayPal Credit if the customer is at least 62 years old and owns their own home. Military veterans are often eligible for a VA home improvement loan or a housing adaptation grant, and many retirees are eligible for grants and loans to make both the outside and inside of their homes more accessible.

AmeriGlide Stairlift Warranties and Installation

Every new AmeriGlide stairlift has a two-year warranty on parts and a five-year warranty on the drive train. Reconditioned products have a one-year parts warranty and three years on the drive train. Used stairlifts sold on AmeriGlide’s website have a one-year warranty on parts.

Most AmeriGlide stairlifts are designed for the homeowner to install, even if they aren’t mechanically inclined. Usually, it takes two or three hours to complete an installation. If you’re unable to or uncomfortable with installing a stairlift on your own, you can hire an AmeriGlide contractor to do the work for around $500 to $600. Installations on steel, concrete, or tile cost a bit more.

How to Buy an AmeriGlide Stairlift

AmeriGlide sells a diverse selection of new and used stairlifts and mobility products on their website and has about 20 stores located around the U.S., mostly in the eastern states. You can speak with a sales or service representative seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST. Each product on the website includes warranty information, return policy and product specifications. AmeriGlide accepts major credit cards, PayPal and e-checks as payment on the site.

AmeriGlide Stairlift Complaints

AmeriGlide gets a “B-” rating from the Better Business Bureau with an average of 10 to 11 complaints per year, with all but one resolved by the company. AmeriGlide made ConsumerAffairs list of the top stairlift companies and reader reviews rank the company at 2.8 out of 5 stars. ConsumerReviews.com gives AmeriGlide a 9.4 on a scale of 10. The majority of customer reviews on AmeriGlide’s website ranged between four and five stars.

The complaints we found mostly revolved around customer service not being responsive, sometimes taking months to resolve an issue. Other complaints mentioned the quality of the stair lift motor was underwhelming.

AmeriGlide Stairlifts FAQ

How much weight can an AmeriGlide stairlift carry?

Standard AmeriGlide stairlifts have a capacity of 280 to 350 pounds, and the heavy-duty lifts can carry up to 500 pounds.

Does an AmeriGlide stairlift need any maintenance?

AmeriGlide stairlifts required almost no maintenance, which helps tremendously with affordability since there are no regular service appointments. Just place a little grease on the track twice a year.

How much space will an AmeriGlide stairlift need to operate?

When the chair is folded up, an AmeriGlide stairlift needs 14 inches of space. The track requires just under a foot of space on the stairs. For staircases over 36 inches wide, an AmeriGlide stairlift should not get in the way of those who use the stairs. If your staircase measures 36 inches or less, sit on a chair against a wall then measure the distance from the wall to your knee to see how much space will be needed and to determine if a stairlift will work without widening the staircase.

What is AmeriGlide’s return policy?

You can return some AmeriGlide mobility products, but not all. Dumbwaiters and vertical platform lifts are custom-made, so you can’t send these products back for a refund, and there is no return on walk-in tubs for sanitation reasons. Customers can return lift chairs, wheelchair lifts, and electric scooters within 10 days of receipt. Stairlifts are somewhat custom built but are usually returnable within five days of receipt. AmeriGlide charges various restocking fees and the buyer pays for return shipping costs for most products.

How do I know I need an AmeriGlide stairlift?

One in every ten seniors over 65 has severe issues with mobility, and that number becomes one in five by the age of 75. If you have suffered an injury that will leave you with a lack of movement in your hips or knees, or arthritis is causing you to dread using the stairs, it’s time to consider a stairlift. Over three million seniors each year are sent to the emergency room for a fall, and a number of those falls could have been avoided with the use of a mobility device like a stairlift. If you’re having trouble getting around or feel unsafe while using the stairs, AmeriGlide will help you to remain active in your home.

Conclusion

If it’s time to get some help navigating stairs, a stairlift from AmeriGlide is a good place to start looking. This company works with each customer to determine specific needs and will design a custom stairlift for curved staircases. We saw thousands of reviews from people who have used AmeriGlide to maintain an independent lifestyle with affordable prices, reliable quality and responsive customer service.

Never do business with this company because they’re a definite scam for senior. The chair stopped working before the end of the third week! Almost impossible to get service and when you do then you get to pay more for repairs!

I purchased an Ameriglide wheelchair lift in December of 2020. I paid $4869 by cashier check. When I inquired about the time of delivery, I was told my cashier check bounced. Cashier's checks do not bounce and anyone who has paid for any item with one knows that.

JSC Federal Credit Union has confirmed that the company deposited the check on December 22, 2020 and the check cleared on December 23. I can not replace the money as it is on a VA grant and I have only my compensation as income.

These people are thieves and liars. I have cancer and I need the chairlift to end my days in some dignity. The VA will not get involved and I can not afford an attorney. I keep getting the same lie. Avoid this company of thieves. They are not worth your time, money or aggravation.

I bought an Amerglide rave and it's under warranty. Beware to stay away from this company. Amerglide has nobody local to repair it and they're sending me the parts to fix it myself. We live in Massachusetts. Shame on Ameriglide.

Timothy always made himself available prior to and through my purchase of the stairlift. Right after my purchase, my father became ill and passed away on September 8 even before I could install it so it sat in my garage unopened for approximately one month. I had called Timothy and left messages and emailed him of my situation and asked for option of returning the lift. He was responding like he was before the purchase and I tried several company numbers and they all redirected back to the sales representative, Timothy. When he finally responded, he told me he would run it up to management and asked for pictures of the boxes which I sent over immediately. I sent a follow up email and called a few more times leaving messages and then he responded with this email: “Hi George, Unfortunately we can’t take this lift back. It’s just too far past our company’s rules on returns. This may change at some point but I have no idea when. Maybe try Offerup or Craigslist. Best Regards, Timothy”. After receiving this message I sent him another email and left a voice message that I would like to speak to a manager for further assistance. Timothy called me back and reiterated their policy of standing behind the 10 day return policy.

When I asked to speak to a manager, he handed the phone over to someone named Robby who identified himself as a “Lowest Level Manager”. He said he was aware of my situation and there was nothing they could do since it was past their warranty according to their policy. I then asked Robby about returning under their used or refurbished program and he stated that the buyback program didn’t exist anymore.

When I asked to speak to a higher level manager, Robby told me he didn’t know who they were and I could get their information from the internet. I want to make everyone aware of their great customer service until the sale but after that they no longer willing to stand by their products or customers. I hope to hear from someone from AmeriGlide that will actually be willing to resolve this issue.

I purchased a stairlift due to the fact that walking the stairs was impossible and the AmeriGlide stairlift was the fit. The stairlift was installed quickly, cleanly and professionally and their response to installing it was very good.

Ameriglide is a fraudulent company! Twice I have ordered batteries, for my 90 year old Mother-in-Law's stairlift! Twice they REFUSED to send the batteries! When I call to ask why they REFUSE to send the batteries, they laugh and hang up! I then called several of the "store locations" and was told that Jeff Sheffer - CEO - AmeriGlide, Inc. treats them the same way too!

They cannot get any parts from the Raleigh, NC location and have to depend on jury rigging to satisfy their customers! I was also told that BatteriesPlus can get these batteries, which I have done. Jeff Sheffer - CEO - AmeriGlide, Inc. needs to have some people come to his home a teach him a lesson in customer service, and I know just the Battle Hardened U.S. Marines that would be more than happy to teach Mr. Sheffer this vitally important lesson!

They are NOT happy about the way Mr. Sheffer has treated my 90 year old Mother-in-Law! BOYCOTT Ameriglide! They have no Honor and cannot be trusted in any Way, Shape, nor Form!

Purchased a Horizon Plus from the Ameriglide store in Lexington, KY. Called in on a Monday, they came and measured on Tuesday, presented a quote, and installed the lift on Wednesday. Excellent product, price, and service.

Our unit was installed 3 weeks past the installation date given. There was no update info provided by the installing company. And the salesman Sean gave me the runaround when we asked for fair compensation for the delay, which had my Mom staying in rehab till the job was complete... my advice? Pay a little more and have the job done right!

We decided we needed a stair lift and lucky enough we found Ameriglide. We live in OR and when I started looking I of course went online. Found Ameriglide, great price, and good overall ratings. Then, went to get local bids as they did not install stair lifts in OR because of OR regulations. Well, was I surprised with the local prices. I got prices from Acorn, Bruno, and a Stannah dealer. The best price I could get locally for an installed lift was $3600 and the high was almost $6000. Took another look online and ended up back at Ameriglide. Talked with one of their reps in AZ and he confirmed he could not install the lift in OR however he could sell me a lift for self installation. He reviewed the process and advised that their lifts were very simple to install and for most the process takes about 3 hours. I talked to my husband and we decided to give it a shot as we could save thousands of dollars. Yes, their price for our delivered Horizon stair lift was $1998.00 which saved us at least $1600 over the next closest price. My husband installed the lift with no problems at all in just about 3 hours as advised. Works great, very nice quality, great instructions and online videos of installation. We can highly recommend Ameriglide if you need a stair lift for your home!

We purchased a curved stair lift from Ameriglide about 3 months ago. The lift was expensive at about $9,000 and the process took over 30 days but the results are outstanding! We love the lift, mother is now safe on the steps, and it is a small price to pay for total peace of mind. We considered using two of their straight stair lifts however mother would have had to transfer on the landing and we felt that could be an issue down the road. That solution would have cost us about $5,000 installed. Happy we decided on the more expensive solution however Ameriglide was the only company we contacted that provided us all the options and costs. We used Roger ** out of their Raleigh NC location and he is excellent.
