Helix Mattress Review

We include Helix Sleep in our 10 Best Mattresses picks because of the company’s excellent mattress matching quiz. The company’s online Sleep Quiz finds your best mattress in three minutes or less. Leading sleep experts designed this quiz to help match consumers with the right bed. Your Sleep Quiz answers tell Helix about your support and pressure relief needs.

Spinal misalignment causes pain in your back, neck and knees, along with chronic headaches and a host of other physical problems. The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine recommends sleeping on a surface that feels comfortable and supportive to avoid pain and fatigue. The type of mattress that meets these standards varies a great deal from one person to another, but Helix Sleep customers get to choose a mattress with excellent spinal alignment that fits their definition of comfort.

Helix Sleep manufactures its mattresses without harmful chemicals using CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified materials. Layers of Memory Plus Foam and Helix Dynamic Foam, combined with hundreds of wrapped coils, create the right firmness and feel for your body. Helix mattresses also have a 10-year warranty.

Upgrade to a LUXE model to get zoned lumbar support, a quilted pillow top with an Ultra Breathable Tencel Cover and a 15-year warranty. Helix LUXE mattresses are 2 inches taller than standard models.

Both lines feature a breathable top layer that does not restrict airflow between your body and the mattress, along with reinforced edges that make getting out of bed easy. Though some may consider Helix Sleep a bed-in-a-box brand, its mattresses are well-constructed and are not flimsy. Helix mattresses weigh 60 to 100 pounds, and LUXE models are 20 to 30 pounds heavier.

One of the most innovative features that Helix provides is its Sleep Quiz. Once you land on its website, you can take the quiz, which asks you a few questions about how you sleep and how your partner sleeps. After you provide this information, Helix will provide your personalized recommendation. After completing the Sleep Quiz, we were matched with the Helix Midnight mattress.

To complete our test, we slept on the Helix mattress every night for 30 nights. We evaluated the mattress based on 10 metrics to evaluate the mattress’s overall quality and comfort: durability, materials, sleep temperature, pressure relief, edge support, sinkage, motion isolation, noise, warranty and price. The Helix Mattress received a score of 86/100. We expanded on our findings below, detailing our experience and how we scored each criterion.

Durability – 8/10

Helix mattresses tend to be heavier than most beds-in-a-box due to the construction of the mattress. Each mattress has either a 10-or a 15-year warranty, which is a solid warranty but not as long as warranties offered by other brands.

Materials – 8/10

Helix mattresses are constructed with multiple layers of memory foam on top of pocket coils. The Helix Midnight Mattress feels very well made, with comfortable layers of memory foam and the supportive pocket coils. When the mattress first arrived, it retained a chemical smell for nearly a week. This is common for memory foam mattresses, but the off-gassing period lasted longer than expected.

Sleep Temperature – 8/10

Helix Mattresses tend to sleep a little warm. The memory foam layered on top of the pocket coils tends to retain heat.

Pressure Relief – 9/10

Based on our 30-day test, the Helix mattress was very supportive with the body contouring of the memory foam and the support of the pocket coils. We tested the Midnight mattress, which is a medium-firm mattress designed for side sleepers, and felt the mattress was supportive, especially for side sleepers, but it was more firm than expected.

Edge Support – 9/10

Although edge support is typically a difficult metric for a memory foam mattress, the pocket coils of the Helix Mattress held the edge better than expected.

Sinkage – 9/10

The term “sinkage” defines how far you sink into a memory foam mattress. The Helix Mattress scored better than most memory foam mattresses because it was not difficult to adjust while lying down. Sinkage can be expected to increase after a few months as the mattress is broken in.

Motion Isolation – 8/10

Due to the construction of the Helix mattress pocket coils, other memory foam mattresses are going to have greater motion isolation. The amount of motion transfer on the Helix Mattress is noticeable but not unbearable.

Noise – 9/10

The Helix Midnight Mattress is a relatively quiet mattress. When testing the mattress, movements were not completely silent like memory foam competitors, but the mattress is by no stretch loud.

Warranty – 9/10

Standard Helix mattresses come with a 10-year warranty that protects you against product defects. The Luxe line comes with a 15-year warranty. The Helix warranty does not cover wear and tear damage.

Price – 9/10

Helix Mattresses cost $899 for a queen mattress, and Helix Luxe Mattresses cost $1,599 for a queen. Helix prices are about average for a bed-in-a-box, but Helix almost always runs promotions with more than $100 off.

Helix Adjustable Beds

Helix Sleep sells a standard metal bed frame, a foundation and an adjustable base that works with any of its mattresses. The adjustable base includes:

  • Adjustable by remote with presets to remember your favorite settings
  • A zero-gravity setting that elevates your head and legs to minimize pressure on your back and alleviates acid reflux and sinus pain from allergies
  • 3D-Wave Massage Technology at the head and foot of the bed with three settings
  • Remote-controlled, under-bed lighting

Helix adjustable bases are easy to set up, and they ship for free.

Helix Sleep Costs

We’ve broken down Helix Sleep’s pricing to give you a better idea of what you can expect to pay:

Mattresses: Helix Sleep mattress pricing is mainly based on what size mattress you buy and whether it’s from the Helix or Helix LUXE product line. Twin Helix mattresses cost $600, queen-sized mattresses cost $995, and king or California king mattresses cost $1,249. Helix LUXE mattresses cost significantly more, with twin mattresses at $995, queen mattresses at $1,799, and king and California king mattresses at $2,199.

Bed frames: Helix Sleep bed frames cost $150 to $175. Foundations, which sit directly on the floor beneath the mattress, run from $200 to $325. Adjustable bases cost $750 to $1,500.

Mattress protectors: Helix Sleep’s mattress protectors run from $75 to $99, and the Ultra Cool Pad costs $100 to $175.

Helix Sleep provides mattress purchase financing from Klarna with no-interest installments or a low APR, depending on your purchase. Buyers who do not qualify for this mattress financing can check the rates and terms from Zibby. Helix Sleep frequently runs mattress sales.

In addition to the prices listed above, Helix Sleep also sells pillows and bedding. One notable product is an adjustable pillow with a removable support insert that lets you find the right amount of loft. The Helix Adjustable Pillow costs $85 to $99, depending on the size you choose.

Helix Sleep Complaints

ConsumerAffairs readers give Helix Sleep 4 out of 5 stars, and The Mattress Nerd rates the company 4.7 out of 5 stars. Consumer Reports recommends the Helix Sleep Midnight Luxe mattress for everyone but big and tall back sleepers. Its durability and support features get strong grades.

Helix Sleep has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. The handful of complaints on the BBB website revolve around defective mattresses. Unfortunately, these customers waited too long to take advantage of the 100-day money-back guarantee.

Helix Sleep Q&A

  • Do Helix Sleep mattresses sag over time or develop an impression where I sleep?

Helix Sleep manufactures its mattresses with high-quality materials to prevent sagging or impressions. Helix Sleep does not mention how long before the mattress might sag, but the 10- or 15-year warranty covers indentations created where you sleep.

  • I have latex allergies. How much latex is in Helix Sleep mattresses?

A Helix Sleep mattress contains no latex whatsoever.

  • Does Helix Sleep offer custom-sized mattresses?

The company sells a variety of mattresses to fit your size and comfort preference, but it does not take custom-sized mattress orders.

  • What are the CertiPUR-US- and OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified materials used in Helix mattresses?

The OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified label ensures that every component in a Helix Sleep mattress, down to the thread, passed testing for harmful substances and is safe in human ecological terms. CertiPUR-US-certified foam mattresses contain no ozone depleters, dangerous flame retardants, heavy metals, formaldehyde, phthalates or volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

  • Do I have to use a mattress protector over a Helix Sleep mattress?

You do not have to use a mattress protector, but we recommend you do so. Helix makes mattress protectors that save your mattress from spills, bacteria and allergens without disrupting airflow, so you don’t overheat.

Conclusion

Helix Sleep sells mattresses that work for most body types. If you are a heavier person, look to the Helix PLUS mattress to get proper support and comfort. Helix Sleep says to expect a break-in period where the mattress feels a little stiff. However, the mattress softens over a few weeks as your body simultaneously adjusts to the new sleep experience.

Helix Sleep keeps mattress selection quick and easy with the Sleep Quiz and simplified pricing model. Its generous 100-night money-back guarantee makes Helix Sleep products worth considering when you need to buy a mattress.
