Humana Vision Insurance Review

Humana is the third largest health insurance provider and plan administrator in the U.S. The company focuses on integrative care to improve health and well-being while reducing costs. In addition to providing insurance for individuals and families, Humana specializes in benefits for military personnel, Medicaid and offers Medicare Supplement plans. We included Humana in our Best Vision Insurance guide because the company provides an excellent vision insurance add-on for Medicare Advantage.

Pros

  • Relatively high allowance for frames and lenses or contacts
  • Convenient in-network provider locations
  • Fair premium prices
  • Handy online resources for members

Cons

  • Must use in-network providers
  • Fees and copays can be confusing

Humana Vision Insurance Options

Most Humana vision insurance plans require you to receive vision care and buy glasses or contact lenses through an in-network provider. Some policies cover out-of-network services, but you will realize little to no cost savings. Humana has over 23,000 in-network providers in many convenient locations, including Sears Optical, LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, Target Optical and JCPenney Optical. You can use the provider locator on the Humana vision insurance website to check for the options in your area.

Humana offers several different vision plans, depending on the state you live in and the type of coverage you need. The chart below shows two of these options, but check the company’s website to see which plans are available to you.

Humana Vision Insurance Costs

Humana vision insurance plans vary in cost depending on where you live, plan inclusions and other factors like your age or gender. We used the company’s quote calculator on the website to get an idea of how much the insurance costs and most carry a $15.99 monthly premium for an individual. Most plans include a $35 enrollment fee, but Humana waives that cost if you purchase dental insurance simultaneously. You can add your spouse or dependent on the policy for an additional fee, which usually amounted to $10 in our test quote.

How to Buy Humana Vision Insurance

Start by visiting Humana’s website and use the quote calculator to find a plan that works for you. Enter your contact information and answer a few questions to see the monthly premium and services covered under the policies. You can then purchase the insurance online or have a representative contact you. If you prefer not to use the online quote tool, call a licensed Humana representative at the number listed on the website.

Humana Vision Insurance Complaints

Humana Inc. is accredited with the Better Business Bureau, which gives the company an A+ rating. As is the case with all insurance companies, the BBB has records of complaints, and Humana answered or resolved each one. TopTenReviews scores Humana vision insurance 7.3 out of 10, deducting a few points from the score because of the enrollment fee. TheBalance notes the company’s variety of low-cost insurance plans and financial stability. Humana’s numerous awards include Forbes magazine’s “The Just 100: America’s Best Corporate Citizens” at the top position for health care providers for three years in a row and best customer satisfaction for mail-order pharmacy from J.D. Power’s U.S. Pharmacy study.

Humana Vision Insurance Q&A

  • How do I find out if my eye doctor is in the Humana network?
The easiest way to determine if your eye care provider is in Humana’s network is to visit the website and click on the link to search the list of in-network providers.

  • Can I get LASIK surgery with Humana vision insurance?
Vision insurance does not cover surgery, which falls under medical insurance benefits. LASIK is elective surgery that Humana vision insurance provides a 15% discount on at a preferred provider. Go out of network, and you will receive 5% off the cost.

  • Can I upgrade my glasses with options like high index lenses or UV filtering with Humana vision insurance?
Yes, for an additional fee you can upgrade your single vision, bifocal or trifocal lenses with a variety of coatings and other enhancements.

  • Does Humana’s vision insurance frame allowance cover designer styles?
You can choose any frame brand available at an in-network provider. If the cost of frames is more than your allowance, you pay the difference.

  • Is there a waiting period for Humana vision insurance coverage to start?
In most cases, there is no waiting period to take advantage of Humana vision benefits, so your coverage begins immediately.

Conclusion

Vision almost always declines with age, and adults over age 65 have increased risk of falls and other accidents due to vision problems. It is essential to take your eye health seriously, but Medicare and many health insurance providers don’t offer vision coverage. Humana is a financially sound company that provides a selection of fairly-priced vision insurance plans. While retirees may compare all Humana vision insurance plans that are appropriate for them, MyOption Vision deserves serious consideration due to the high frame and lens allowance.
