Stannah Stairlifts FAQ

  • Will a Stannah stairlift work with my staircase?
You need to schedule a free in-home stair survey to learn about the options Stannah can provide, but Stannah can almost always install a stairlift regardless of whether your staircase is long, narrow, curved or steep.

  • Can I have a Stannah stairlift installed if there is a doorway at the top or bottom of my staircase?
Yes, it is still possible to install a Stannah stairlift when there is a door at the top or bottom of the staircase. Stannah installs a retractable rail that automatically unfolds when the individual wants to use the stairlift.

  • Can other people still use the staircase alongside a Stannah stairlift?
Yes, having a Stannah stairlift does not prevent other people from using the staircase. The stairlift seat and/or rail folds up when not in use.

  • How much will I pay for a Stannah stairlift?
The final cost of a Stannah stairlift depends on a few factors, so you need to schedule the in-home survey to get a no-obligation quote. The final price depends on the length and width of the stairs and if they curve or extend more than one level, the mobility needs of the consumer, and any added safety or comfort features.

  • How can other companies sell less expensive stairlifts compared to Stannah?
Stannah stairlifts are made to last for decades. The company uses high-quality materials to build each stairlift, including all safety and comfort features. Stannah also offers a higher level of customization with everything from special features to a variety of upholsteries and colors. All of this makes for a more expensive stairlift, but one that is built to last and be comfortable to use as long as you need it.

Conclusion

Stannah stairlifts rank among the best in the industry regarding quality, value and responsive customer service. As more seniors live alone in their own home, the desire to maintain a high level of freedom and independence while remaining safe and secure is paramount. With over 150 years of experience and a multitude of awards for its commitment to the health and safety standards that govern the stairlift industry, Stannah is a trusted choice for stairlifts among consumers.

I've had my second Stannah Stairlift since Dec. 2021. I waited a little too long to have a service visit, so when my lift wasn't working well, I called and in two days a young service person, "James" arrived. He called 1/2 hr ahead to let me know when he'd arrive. He was polite, accurate and competent even explaining how the repair and service went in language I could understand. He's quite an addition to an excellent company and thank you for all the help you provide. Gyneth ** age 89

Rated 1 out of 5 stars Updated 32 minutes ago The last straw. Never been happy with this - It finally fell apart and is blocking my cellar exit. This has to be the most poorly engineered and cheaply constructed thing we had ever bought. I got it for my late wife and since I am approaching 85 I kept it here. The foot rest had failed for the third time about a year ago and I decided nobody knew how to fix it so I never called it in, the seat cover and the footrest cover are falling off, the right seat rotation adjustment lever broke off, the safety switches are often intermittent and the hard stops work sometime and leave the chair half way up or down.

I refused to spend any more money on it. The last straw was this morning when it jumped the track when I was on it and pitched me off, and some plastic pieces fell off from somewhere and now it is stuck and half tipped over. It cost us nearly $5,000 for about a year of trouble free operation. Is this thing for real???. I just want it gone!!!! Oct 18 update: Their promises mean absolutely nothing. No one has called or visited as promised me. (See last response). I called again and described its dead condition after it had jumped off the track. I was curtly told that nothing would be done until I paid more money. It is blocking my basement stairs.

I am 84 and have to crawl around it every time I have to go out or do my laundry or buy groceries. They won't come out to fix it only to remove it. My experience with this company has been a complete disaster. Take my advice and go elsewhere. Their letters and promises mean absolutely nothing. Don't be fooled by these companies that take advantage of us elderly and handicapped.

Two lovely men came to us on the east end of Long Island, Kris ** and Laurence, all the way from N.J. They instructed us in the use of the stairlift, and when we were still unsure about our ability to do it ourselves, we talked to Will, our original salesman. Kris returned that very weekend to go over the instructions with us and explained all we needed to know. Many thanks to you both and to Stannah.

We just had 2 units installed on the same day, the technicians Eric B and Eric C were on time, very polite, professional and did excellent cleaning after the job was done.

Eric C explained how they worked in easy terms so we understood everything we needed to know even what to do if there was a sign something was wrong and who to call. We would recommend both technicians. They were excellent. Sincerely, Nancy **.

Stannah's Website says that they have service 365 days a year including Christmas. Twice I have called on a Friday because the stair lift we have is not working at all. I was told I would get a call back that day. I did not receive a call back.

I called on Saturday, left message and was told I would get a call back by the end of the day. I did not get a call back. I called again on Monday and set up an appointment.

Later on Monday I finally got a call back from the service department to see what the problem was. The caller did not know that I already had an appointment.

On the second time the stair lift was not working I call and left a message. I was told someone would get back to me that day. I did not get a call back. I called the next day and was told someone would get back to me today. Still waiting for a call.

I got a call from Steve in when I requested more information, we had a nice conversation and he said he was going to do his best to get me in as soon as possible.

He had me on hold for quite some time which I was OK with it and then he had to call someone because he couldn’t find a date this week and he said that they want to get to people as quickly as possible so the earliest he could do was Monday morning.

I said that was fine but I’d like to not push it any further because I can barely walk up the stairs as it is now.

So towards the end of our phone call he says, "If Acorn calls you because they get a sense that you’re looking into this they are very pushy and I wouldn’t deal with them if I were you."

I don’t really understand a sales person that is going to talk bad about another company. Been in sales for many many years before I was disabled. So here it is Wednesday and he calls me today to say well they can’t do Monday morning.

They have to push it up to the evening and I explain to him that just waiting almost a week was a little too much and now that he wants to push it later I am starting to second-guess the company and I think I’ll look elsewhere so Steven hangs up on me.

I entered a contract a year ago with a salesperson who has since died. He had made an agreement with us to charge annual fee of $219 for maintenance on both the units. My contract states this.

But the people are now dancing around it, trying to say it meant to be per stairlift even though the contract says nothing about that. I was so afraid of this happening, and it did. Doc died and they won’t honor my contract.

I’m very disappointed, to say the least. I can only think that if something goes wrong with the lifts they will wiggle out of that as well.

Back in 2017, after researching several chairlift companies and talking with representatives, I settled on our local Stannah dealer. The representative came out a few days later and was very knowledgeable as to what type of chairlift I should get. I needed the chairlift for my husband, who had ALS.

What appealed to me is that they were able to install it a few days later, plus they had used models available which cut the cost in half. Even though my husband is gone now, I use the chairlift for moving heavy items up and down the stairs. I've never had a problem with the chairlift. If I were to move, I think I would get another Stannah installed.
