American Residential Warranty FAQ

Can I choose the contractor for an American Residential Warranty service call?

Yes, within limits. American Residential Warranty has a working relationship with a group of pre-qualified professionals, but you can tell the claims representative you have a preferred contractor when you make a service request. You should speak to your contractor and let them know they have to call for authorization before making any repairs.

Is there a waiting period before American Residential Warranty plans take effect?

Yes, there is a 30-day waiting period after you buy an American Residential Warranty plan. You will not have coverage during that time.

Does American Residential Warranty charge a deductible for service or repairs?

Like most home warranties, American Residential Warranty plans have a trade service fee. Home warranties are not home insurance, so there is no deductible. The trade service fee covers up to two appliances per call, so verify the amount when you speak to your claims representative.

What if American Residential Warranty’s repair technician can’t fix an appliance?

American Residential Warranty will either replace the appliance or pay you an amount to use toward the cost of a replacement. Read the terms of the contract before you finalize your home warranty to ensure you’re familiar with all plan policies.

How long does it take American Residential Warranty to schedule service?

American Residential Warranty’s goal for emergency calls is within 24 hours. If your breakdown is not an emergency, the company will have a service tech at your door within 48 hours after placing your claim.

Are there limits on an American Residential Warranty plan?

Yes, there are some limits, which vary depending on the plan and add-ons you choose. Some appliances and systems have a $1,000 per year cost limit for diagnosis and repair or replacement, while others may have a $600 coverage limit. Specific parts may be excluded from coverage, such as Freon in an air conditioning unit. Read the documentation thoroughly for each American Residential Plan you consider to make the best choice for your home.

Conclusion

Your homeowner’s insurance does not cover expensive appliance and other repairs that can put your bank account in the red. Consider the costs and benefits of a home warranty, and if you decide to buy one, American Residential Warranty offers customizable options for fine-tuning the coverage you need.

American Residential Warranty customer service is awful. I submitted a claim in October of 2020 for my dishwasher to be repaired. It is now March 2021 and my dishwasher has not been repaired.

It literally takes an act of congress to speak with a customer rep. about your claim and then when you do get to speak with someone it is a useless conversation.

My debit card expired and they didn't have my updated info on file, guess what they were quick to call me about that payment that didn't go through. I cancel my coverage because it shouldn't be so hard to get a claim resolved.

If I could give American Residential Warranty a negative 0 for a rating that still would be too good of a rating for this company. They are a money grubbing rip off company.

Good luck getting a hold of anyone at ARW. They sure do have time to take your money though. I have been waiting over 3 weeks for a buyout check on my washer (which they would only give me $395.00 for).

I am on hold right now and have been on hold for over an hour trying to find out where my check is that was to be sent out 3 weeks ago.

The customer service reps are rude and hang up on you or they transfer you to a line that no one ever picks up. Please choose a different home warranty company.

Home Owners Beware!!! Do not use American Residential as your home warranty company. The service representatives are the most unprofessional, non-caring, nonchalant, rudest individuals ever; and that’s if you can get them on the phone.

They’ll leave you on hold for hours, or just hang up on you. My HVAC system needed to be replaced. It cost $7000. American Residential wouldn’t pay for it to be.

I cancelled my contract in writing with American Residential on October 12, 2020, and stopped all withdrawals from my checking account on the same date. What does American Residential?

I’ve found out that American Residential has continued to take monthly payments out using my debit card, which they had no authorization to do. That’s committing fraud.

Consumers please be aware. I’ve reported the company to the BBB. Don’t allow yourself to be taken in by this company. I wouldn’t recommend this company to my worst enemy!

Most horrible company I have ever worked with. I made FIVE calls to them this am and when they transfer I get disconnected. One time on hold for 1 hour and 17 minutes. Another time they transferred me to a furniture repair company.

I even asked for a supervisor and didn’t get one. Their phone connections are garbled. Very very poor customer service.

This company is very bad. I had a service claim for my dryer and a tech came and check on it. They said we need a part, but later found out they don’t have a that part for my dryer anymore.

The company never reach out to me for three weeks, so I finally reach out to them. I was on hold for over an hour and finally hang up. I waited. Still no one reach out to me so I called again. I was I hold for 3 hours before someone came on the line.

They only offered me $300, for my dryer. I have one of the newer types. I told them it’s not good and the guy told me because you have been with us for a while we will give you $450.00. I told him it’s not enough and he hang up on me.

Up till now nobody has tried to reach out to me still. As I type this I am on hold with them for over an hour now, but They have come into my account and taken out their 3 payments for each month. I have been with them over 5 years now.

Awesome service. Had American Home Shield, this company is night and day better. Awesome experience. Have used them 4 times, best for my air conditioner repair, so quick and fast!! Couldn't be happier I chose them over American home shield and Choice who was awful also.

Home owner BEWARE!! This is not the company to do business with. American Residential Warranty is so difficult to work with (they owe me about 3 hours hold time) and now only have a international phone number to report claims.

My phone does not make international calls and I should not have to change my phone service to accommodate this change on American Residential Warranty's part.

American Residential Warranty does not send repair people out in a timely manner and do not refund the $55.00 service fee when their repair people do not show up. Very poor business practice. Save yourself the headache and try your luck with another home warranty company.

Every time something breaks they charge you to send someone out. Then they say it isn't covered. So you end up paying them twice to end up paying someone else to do the work. Save your money! Was with the company 6+ years.

Never used it until now and I had three issues at once and none where covered. When asked why did they make me pay knowing it wasn't covered; I was told that I should have read the contract to see what is and isn't cover.

However, it is not taken into consideration that all you know is that it is broken; you aren't a plumber or a repairman so reading the contract in plumber and repairman jargon still will not tell you whether or not the part is covered. TOTAL SCAM TO TAKE YOU MONEY!

Total waste of money. Don’t bother buying this warranty. They will get you with the fine print and they won’t actually pay for anything.

We submitted a claim when our AC went out (which the salesperson said they covered), but for $6000+ charge, they said they would pay us back $125. Ridiculous.

This company sucks balls. I had a water heater break down. They would not replace it. They told me they were going to give me $400. They never did.

Then my dryer broke down. They did not replace it or fix it. THEY SAID they were going to pay me $200 and they never did. PLEASE do waste your hard earned money on these sham artist. They are a crock of dog poop.

This company is the pittttts, very unprofessional, took my money out account in seconds but told me it will be 10 to 15 business days before it goes back in my acct. Then the rep. Who I barely understood told me don't worry about my money... They only have 1 company they were contracting to do the work‼ The young Lady who originally took the claim appeared to be dysfunctional, Gave me headache the size of the universe.

Please do not use this company unless you read the fine print. Regardless of what you are told at the time of purchase, you may be dismayed to find out that you do not actually have coverage for the things that you were told would be covered.

My husband and I are retired and we purchased the premium home warranty because our home was 10 years old and we were concerned that things could start breaking down. We had the warranty for 5 months when our heating system stopped heating our home. When we purchased the warranty, we were told by the sales person that our HVAC system was covered and that if it failed they would fix the system.

I asked him if that included the indoor and outdoor components of the HVAC system including the heat pump, air handler, condenser coil, and evaporator coil, and compressor, and I was told that everything was covered under our specific policy. Today, a service tech came out and told us that our evaporator coils were faulty and needed to be replaced which would cost $1900. The claims department told us that we are not covered and that regardless of what we were told, we should have read the contract in full. Basically telling us that we should have read the fine print.

I explained to him that like most folks, we tend to believe what is said to us and we didn’t feel the need to read every detail, because we believed what we were originally told. I also told him that sales people should provide all details and not try to mislead the consumer. We are very dissatisfied with this company, and we would not recommend this particular home warranty company to anyone.

DON'T GET THIS COMPANY! I paid $89.99 for years, never really needing service. When I needed service they didn't even provide service. When I had problems with my appt. I cancelled to make sure I got my fee refunded. They said they would give me a refund and I could do it another time. They agreed to a refund but they still took the money from my account, deceptively as a recurring pymt (which it was not an agreed upon recurring pymt.). It was my one-time purchase which they had already told me that they would refund me & give me a credit.

You will wait on the phone for 15, 20 minutes or more just waiting to talk to someone. They say you can select your contractor in their contract, but they don't live up to their own online contract to get another date. The staff was unprofessional, poor customer service, you pay and still don't get any service.

DON'T GET THIS COMPANY! ALL THIS MONEY I PAID IS LOSS! NO SERVICE GIVEN WHEN YOU NEED THEM! PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH THEM!
