Are Adjustable Beds Worth It for Seniors? Our Verdict

Healthy sleep habits are important for people of all ages, but especially seniors who are more likely to experience sleeping issues. Prolonged insomnia can lead to long term physical and mental health consequences — good sleep hygiene can help eliminate the threat.

After more than 500 hours of research, we determined that adjustable beds are beneficial for the senior population, especially those with certain medical conditions, pain, or lack of a sleep routine. Buying an adjustable bed is deeply personal, and experts recommend matching the mattress to your body weight for the best results.

According to our conversations with sleep experts and clinicians, the people who stand to benefit most are older persons with:

  • Back, neck, and/or spine pain
  • Gastroesophageal reflux
  • Arthritis
  • Poor circulation
  • Mobility issues
  • Those sleeping with a CPAP
  • Those who sleep with a partner with different needs

The alternative, not finding a comfortable mattress to aid in sleep health, can be detrimental. Dr. Carleara Weiss, clinician scientist behavioral sleep medicine and circadian rhythms and sleep science advisor at Aeroflow Sleep elaborates:

“The long-term effects of long-term sleep deprivation include cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and stroke, kidney disease, higher chance of diabetes, and obesity. Chronic sleep deprivation is also a threat to mental health, increasing the risk and worsening the impacts of depression.”

Buying Tip

Some brands like Temper-Pedic and Puffy sell the mattress and base together in a set. This ensures you get a mattress that is compatible with an adjustable bed. Other brands sell an adjustable base and then recommend compatible mattress models to purchase in addition to the base. Some bases have restrictions on the mattress you can use, so confirm with the brand beforehand. During our test, we had success using the online chat feature to help determine the most compatible mattress for the adjustable base.

Our Research and Testing Methodology

Puffy Serenity Adjustable Base

Four mattresses are available to go with the adjustable bed base: Cloud, Lux, Royal, and Monarch. You can bundle each as a set with the adjustable bed base and get two pillows, a sheet set, and a mattress cover.

Health Benefits of Adjustable Beds

Adjustable beds offer many benefits for older adults. The first and most prominent benefit is a better night of sleep, which ultimately results in better physical and mental health functions. A lack of sleep can increase one’s risk for depression, falls, dementia, and cardiovascular disorders. Improving one’s sleep can help decrease these risks.

Other health benefits of best adjustable beds for seniors include:

  • Pain relief
  • Increased comfort
  • Pressure relief
  • Decreased of snoring
  • Improved acid reflux
  • Better mobility getting in and out of bed

In our analysis of customer sentiment regarding their adjustable bed, many buyers expressed their happiness with the ability to experience more prolonged sleep. Optimal sleep times are important for your overall health, says Dr. Catherine Darley, a naturopathic sleep expert and founder of Skilled Sleeper.

“During sleep, melatonin is elevated. Melatonin has many important actions throughout the body as an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant, and those benefits are awarded when we have optimal sleep time. Another important system that is most active during sleep is the glymphatic system. This system clears out metabolic waste products, including beta-amyloid proteins, which can accumulate into the plaques seen in Alzheimer’s disease.”

Features to Look for in Adjustable Beds

While everyone’s needs vary, the following are the most common features for an aging adult to look for in adjustable beds. When it comes to senior safety features, prioritize the following:

  1. Adjustable bed heights to make getting out of bed easier and reduce the risk of falls.
  2. Under-bed lighting illuminates the area around the bed and reduces trip hazards.

We recommend prioritizing these features when shopping for adjustable bed frames for seniors, especially if you’re someone who gets up frequently at night. Research shows that most elderly falls that require doctor care occur in the bedroom and bathroom.

“For safety, have a light at the bedside which can easily be turned on without getting out of bed, but do not sleep with the light on as it may suppress your melatonin,” Dr. Catherine suggests.

While lights placed in and around your bed are important safety features, bright lights can interfere with your circadian system and your sleep patterns. Under-bed lighting in adjustable beds may be a proper middle-ground solution.

Lastly, you might consider purchasing from a brand that offers white glove delivery. Mattresses and frames are very heavy and their size makes them hard to move and set up on your own. Saatva and Tempur-Pedic offer this as a complimentary service, while other brands charge an additional fee.

Easy-to-Use Adjustments

Here, you’re looking for the following basics to function smoothly and easily:

  • Silent motors
  • Well-labeled remote controls
  • Quick speed of adjustments
  • Varying leg heights

Adjustable Leg Heights

Adjusting the leg height is a crucial safety feature for those with joint pain or muscle weakness. Just be aware that you must make this adjustment when setting up the bed.

  • Higher leg heights make getting out of bed easier.
  • Lower leg heights reduce the risk of falls from a tall surface.

Our research determined that Helix has the most customizable leg heights. When setting up your base, remember to account for the mattress height and base thickness. Some brands offer a zero-clearance design, which means you can remove the legs to place the mattress as close to the floor as possible.

Preset Positions

Preset positions are the settings that your adjustable bed comes with, requiring just one button push to get to that position. Common preset positions that especially help the senior population include zero gravity, anti-snore, and reading or TV mode. An adjustable bed that offers the option for a custom preset is even more useful as each person prefers and is more comfortable in different positions.

  • Zero gravity: Raises the head and legs above the heart to relieve pressure.
  • Anti-snore, including partner: Head raises slightly, with the option to adjust only one side for a partner.
  • Reading and TV: The head raises most of the way up, about 60 degrees, with the foot raised slightly.
  • Flat: Returns the head and foot to a completely flat position.
  • Custom: Preset positions according to individual preferences.

Natural Form offers four custom preset positions, while Nectar offers three. The others on our list just offer one or two.

Warranties

It's best to look for an adjustable bed with a warranty on mechanical and electrical components, also known as full warranties. Of the beds we reviewed, Saatva carries the longest full warranty at five years, while Amerisleep and Natural Form carry a one-year full warranty. Warranties vary across the category, with some brands offering limited warranties and others offering long warranties.

The longest warranties we found were from Puffy and Nectar — both offer lifetime or forever warranties, respectively. Some brands offer warranties that cover accidental damage from things like moving or pets, but in our research, we did not come across a warranty like that.

Adjustable Beds Costs and Warranties

Adjustable beds cost between $300 and $7,000 depending on the brand, size, and features. This guide recommends brands with models that start below $3,000 to accommodate most people’s budgets.

Saatva offers a discount to seniors 65 and older. Other brands offer discounts to students, teachers, military members, and first responders.

Buying Tip

In some cases, you may need special sheets that fit an adjustable bed. Bedding experts told us that the best sheets for adjustable beds are fitted sheets with deep pockets that wrap tightly around the mattress. Alternatively, you can use flat sheets with elastic edges or bands that stay with the mattress when it moves.

What Customers Say About Their Experience Using Adjustable Beds

Retirement Living analyzed thousands of online reviews for the top adjustable mattresses and bed frames. The most common reasons customers purchased an adjustable bed or frame were to combat back pain and recover from knee or hip surgeries. Other customers said that sleeping in an elevated position helped alleviate acid reflux symptoms.

In some cases, customers reported that the thickness of their mattress affected how much the frame could adjust to various positions. For the best results, we recommend purchasing the brand’s compatible mattress for the adjustable bed frame.

Customers who bought adjustable beds are most satisfied with the following:

  • The features customers appreciate most are the lighted remote controls, the zero gravity settings, and the cooling features available on some hybrid models.
  • People are most pleased with Saatva’s customer service, frequently referencing its white glove service and their speed in handling customer return or exchange requests.
  • Better sleep habits and a more restful night's sleep were mentioned in 82% of positive customer reviews.

The most common complaints about adjustable beds were:

  • Occasionally, the mattress moves off the frame unexpectedly during adjustments and ends up unsupported. So far, mattress brands have yet to find a way to combat the movement, and customers are responsible for readjusting the bed.
  • Seniors are more hesitant to buy a bed online than younger shoppers, citing concerns about comfort and cost. Brands offering longer trial periods help ensure older adults have enough time to sample the bed. Adjustable mattress brands recommend allotting 30 to 90 days for the mattress to break in.
  • While many customers say the bed is quiet during position adjustments, some warn that the frame itself is squeaky when they move at night.

Adjustable Beds FAQ

Will Medicare pay for an adjustable bed for a senior?

Yes, Medicare Part B will cover an adjustable bed for a senior as long as it is deemed medically necessary and prescribed by a Medicare-enrolled physician.

What is the best type of mattress for an adjustable bed?

Most types of mattresses work with adjustable bed bases. Look for one that is latex, memory foam, or hybrid, as those will be flexible enough to bend and adjust while still maintaining its firmness.

Where can you buy an adjustable bed?

While not something seniors are accustomed to, it’s common practice to order a bed online nowadays. Although this is different than in the past, it might be ideal for those with mobility issues who cannot get into and out of stores easily to try out beds. Vendors like Puffy and Helix offer matching quizzes online to help you select the right bed and mattress for your needs. The vendors we reviewed all sell their beds online with free shipping or white glove delivery and setup.

How can seniors improve their sleep habits?

In addition to using an adjustable bed, seniors can establish healthy sleep routines by practicing what Dr. Carleara Weiss calls good sleep hygiene.
“For example, keep the sleep environment dark, quiet, and at a temperature of 65 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Maintaining a daily routine is pivotal to maintaining a healthy circadian rhythm (biological clock). This would include keeping regular wake ups and bedtimes, eating meals at the same time, and exercising at least 150 minutes per week, preferably at the same time of day.”

Should I choose a hospital bed or an adjustable bed?

The cost of a hospital bed is often covered by insurance when deemed durable medical equipment. And in many cases, hospital beds are more appropriate for those with special medical conditions like bed sores or localized pain. Adjustable beds come in more sizes than just a twin, so they can be attractive to seniors who don’t want to sleep alone.

Concluding Thoughts on Adjustable Beds

Bottom Line: Adjustable beds provide older adults with a more comfortable rest.

Our top picks for adjustable beds are a great starting point for your research. While customer service is considerably even across the board, other features such as affordability, warranties, and ease of operation can be deciding factors.
