Top Adjustable Bed Shopping Tips
We based this review of the best adjustable beds on several factors including price, quality, warranty, and ease of use. Other features considered were durability, tilting options and programmable positions. We evaluated over 20 adjustable beds and after weighing the pros and cons of each one identified seven worth your time to look into. We also pored through customer reviews and information provided by the Better Business Bureau. While several companies ranked highly, we narrowed the list to seven manufacturers: Natural Form, Reverie, Easy Rest Adjustable Sleep Systems, Rest Right, BeautyRest, Tempur-Pedic and Leggett and Platt.
Keep reading to find out you need to know before investing in an adjustable bed, including the features you can expect from each of the top three companies and buying tips. As noted by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, sleep is vital to the proper functioning of the brain, heart, lungs, and for other health benefits, so finding the right bed is critical.
- Ask about the different features included in the price of each model.
- Before you choose a bed, choose a mattress that’s both comfortable and works with an adjustable bed base.
- Read the warranty fine print or ask the dealer about the limitations of adjustable bed warranties
How to buy an adjustable bed
If this is your first time shopping for an adjustable bed, check out these four tips to get you started.
Choose an adjustable bed mattress first
Several types of mattresses (memory foam, latex, and air mattresses) are compatible with adjustable beds. However, innerspring mattresses contain a rigid border and will not work with bending and folding motions of adjustable beds. Whatever kind of mattress you prefer, try it out on an adjustable bed if possible. Each mattress type reacts differently when folded and bent on an adjustable bed frame. The mattress dealer can point you in the right direction of proper adjustable bed mattresses.
Decide on a mattress first
It’s important your mattress can fold and bend with little resistance and not lose the supportive qualities you purchased it for in the first place. For example, if you like air mattresses, find one that is made for an adjustable bed frame. It should distribute air evenly through the bladder system as it’s folded. This will prevent air from under- or over-inflating certain areas of the mattress. The most popular mattresses for adjustable beds are memory foam and latex.
Find a pre-built adjustable bed base
Get a mostly pre-built adjustable bed base
Adjustable beds are available in many forms, from ones you put together yourself that resemble hospital beds, to ones that look like a stylish bed you’d find in a furniture store. Make sure you ask your dealer if the bed’s base comes largely pre-assembled to avoid any surprises. Most reputable brands’ beds are delivered to your door mostly assembled. It shouldn’t take you more than 10 minutes with a couple of pages of instruction for you to have a fully-working adjustable bed.
If the model you choose has wheels, attaching them might be the only thing you’ll need to do. Modern styles of adjustable bed bases won’t have wheels because they can fit into certain types of bed frames. These beds look like normal beds until they’re adjusted to their various positions.
You can get an adjustable bed warranty
Check the warranty in detail
Reputable adjustable bed manufacturers should offer warranties ranging from 10 to 20 years on the bed base. If the model you want says it has a lifetime warranty, make the dealer explain in detail what that includes. It’s a good idea to make sure you have at least one year of free technical support and on-site labor. This gives you peace of mind as you get used to your new adjustable bed and how it works.
Adjustable beds benefits
While the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to adjustable beds, it’s always good to know the positive and negative aspects of most things to ensure there are no surprises. Here are some pros and cons of owning an adjustable bed.
Adjustable bed – Pros
Weigh the pros and cons
-
Pain Relief: People who suffer from chronic back pain benefit greatly from using an adjustable bed. Users can alter the position of the bed to one that’s most comfortable, taking pressure away from painful areas, allowing those areas to rest. Arthritis, neck problems, degenerative spondylolisthesis and osteoarthritis are common conditions that see relief from using an adjustable bed.
-
Comfortable: Adjustable beds have a large number of reclining positions that let you sit up at any angle or incline you want. You’ll have optimum comfort for things like watching TV, reading, eating and even typing on a laptop. Additionally, certain adjustable bed models are designed where each side of the bed operates independently. If you want to sit up to read, your partner can lay flat and go to sleep, keeping you both comfortable.
-
Lumbar support: Many adjustable bed models include lumbar support to help people with lower back issues alleviate some of their pain.
-
USB chargers: Call it a sign of the times but most adjustable beds come with multiple USB charges so you can charge your devices more easily.
Adjustable bed – Cons
-
Mattress choices: Choosing a mattress is slightly more limiting. Traditional spring mattresses won’t work with an adjustable bed.
-
More expensive: Given their features and the technology that comes with them, adjustable beds are more expensive than normal beds.
-
Mechanical failures: Anything involving motors and electronic components lends itself to mechanical failures at one point or another.

Frequently Asked Questions about Adjustable Beds
Are adjustable beds safe?
Yes, but consumers are warned to keep small children and pets away from the base to avoid possible injury. Some models have features like gravity fall detection and pinch detection to make sure kids and pets are safe as the bed raises and lowers, or if the power goes out.
How durable are adjustable beds?
Adjustable beds are very durable. However, sitting on the corners or edge of the bed can warp various parts, such as the foam, frame, or struts. Jumping or standing on the bed can damage both the motors and the frame. Tilting the base on its side could cause damage to the legs and the leg screws.
What are some of the warranty limits for adjustable beds?
Whether a warranty is for 10, 20 or 40 years, there are stipulations. For example, The TEMPUR-Ergo Premier has a 40-year warranty on the frame, but the warranty on parts and labor is only for 5-years. The Leggett and Platt Prodigy 2.0 has a 25-year warranty. There is a full first-year warranty with a limited warranty over the second and third year covering adjustable base parts, and the consumer must pay service and transportation costs. The fourth through twenty-fifth year covers steel and mechanical base parts but not electronics, electrical components, drive motors or massage motors.
Does Medicare pay for an adjustable bed?
It depends on your circumstance. You will need a doctor’s prescription showing you need an adjustable bed for a specific condition. In this case, Medicare can pay for the adjustable bed base, excluding the mattress. If you are prescribed an adjustable bed for temporary use, that can get approved by Medicare much faster. You can also check out Medicare supplemental plans to see what kind of coverage they offer.
What is the best type of mattress for an adjustable bed?
Not only do you have to consider comfort but you’ll need to find a mattress that can flex with the movement of the adjustable bed base. Popular choices include memory foam, latex and air mattresses.
